FAQ: The Retro Bullet Planter

Product update: In December of 2005, Hip Haven began shipping bullet planters manufactured using a more advanced technique (heat curing), which has drastically increased our production capacity and minimized irregularities in the product such as air bubbles. The surface texture has a smoother, more matte finish than the previous model, and fibers are more prominent on the inside of the bowl than the outside. We have introduced several new colors and discontinued others. If you are a repeat customer, we think you will be pleased with the changes. Please feel free to contact us with any questions about changes in the new version prior to ordering. Thank you.

Q: How will plants drain?
A: This material is watertight, so without a hole drilled in the bottom, the planters will not drain. We will drill a hole for you upon request. Just send an email after you place your order. Around our offices we place a potted plant within the planter so we can switch them out from time to time. To create a nice finished look, we put styrofoam peanuts at the bottom of the bowl, place the pot on top, and fill the space around it with more styrofoam. On top of this layer we place river rocks or moss to create a continuous "ground" for the plant. With cacti, which require infrequent watering, you can pot directly in the planter, making sure to use gravel or sand about halfway to the top, followed by cactus soil.

Q: Can I use my planter outdoors?
A: Yes, but we recommend it for covered outdoor use. Fiberglass is extremely durable and water-resistant (boats are made out of it), but after years of exposure, some of the resin will erode and the color may fade. Powder coated and plated stands will eventually pit if uncovered and exposed to sun and rain. If you plan to use these in an uncovered area, we recommend you buy the galvanized stand and request a hole drilled in the bottom of your planter.

Q: What if my planter is scuffed and doesn't come clean with soap and water?
A: If your planter becomes scruffed or scratched and regular cleaning doesn't seem to help, try a degreasing cleaner like Simple Green. It won't harm the finish and works well for removing marks from fiberglass.

Q: Do these look like the vintage bullet planters?
A: We think so, and we're pretty serious vintage collectors ourselves! The most significant difference is that our planters are in new condition and have not faded or deteriorated with years of use. Improvements in fiberglass pigments, and increased absorption of the pigment into the fiberglass make the fibrous texture less prominent than in the vintage version.
